Here are reviews of what learners are saying about SpanishMOOC.
|Bill||The annotated video format is very effective!|
|Kara||I just wanted to thank you for your efforts in teaching Spanish to the masses. I have been trying to learn Spanish on my own for years and this is the first time I actually feel like I have a chance at it. I am so impressed with how you have set up this class and I am excited to log in every chance I get to continue learning.Again, thank you! I appreciate this opportunity more than you know.|
|Lou||I would like to sincerely thank you for your work in this course. I work two jobs and I am taking a writing course, and well…it’s a very busy life for me. Thanks to all that make this a wonderful learning experience. Your dedication and persistence is in every lesson.|
|Kas||It’s the first time I’m having an online course and think you’re doing a great job, the amount of effort and work you put in this is impressive, bravo!|
|Amy||The [middle-school kids] really liked the fact that they could watch something authentic and have the benefit of the subtitles and context. I think varied ways to practice that content like you have in the exercises is good and I am sure in time things will continue to build so there is potentially more variety. Anything that has a game like interface is going to be popular with my age group|
|Ann||I’m loving the course and getting a lot out of it|
|Cheryl||I have been taking your course and absolutely love it. Thanks for all that you’ve offered to so many people. Your course is so well prepared and explanatory. I’ve really enjoyed the online educational experience.|
|Shannon||I love the class! Since I can’t fit AP Spanish into my roster next year, this was my compromise with myself haha, and I’m loving every minute of it! The activities are so much more fun than actual Spanish class in school because they’re interactive, not “fill out this worksheet after watching the video” type stuff, so it’s really great!|
|Karen||Loving the course|
|Rivkah||It is truly remarkable–what you are achieving.|
|Karen||I am LOVING this course!|
|Rachel||Thanks very much for all your hard work in putting this course together – I did 100-level Spanish paper through [name removed] University (distance learning), and I have found your course to be so much better designed and implemented.|
|Anonymous||I just want to say thank you! You provide lots of good material and the software is great (especially for being used for the first time by those masses). I’m sure there is a lot of effort behind it and offering this course for free is a wonderful gift for all people who want to learn Spanish and to have fun at the same time.|
|Britta||Had a great time at my first hangout today and felt like I met three other people who were close to my Spanish proficiency and actually helped me learn a lot. We were all trying at the end to find a way to “friend” each other or keep our group together for next week.|
|Michael|| I am able to read and understand Spanish to a high level but I have never written in Spanish nor do I have any understanding of the grammar of the language. Even though you have stated that the course is for beginners with no knowledge of Spanish, I have found it informative, engaging and learnt many new concepts.Watching and listening to the videos was terrific. Exposure to the different genres (and accents) such as contemporary songs, short stories, talks etc. made it enjoyable and I learnt many new words or words used in ways I wasn’t familiar. I also think is a good way to gain a better understanding of Hispanic culture around the world. If possible it would be good to view and listen to contemporary and traditional songs, poems, interviews, talks on a range of topics, short documentaries on aspects of Hispanic culture etc.
I liked the way Instreamia stopped after each phrase giving you time to respond to questions as well as allowing you to play back any section. My main criticism of Instreamia is an aesthetic one. I found it too cluttered with information which can be distracting.
|Charlotte||So far so good. I like the videos, especially the music videos. Instreamia is awesome. For me, listening to the ted talk and pinocchio was a little like trying to drink from a fire hose, too much language. I am a beginner, have never even completed a HS spanish course, but have been teaching myself in a vareity of ways. I have not taken a univeristy course in a long time but was able to download all the software and find my way around the course sites info. I’m a little nervous about figuring out the live chats/voice practice . I’m hoping I will become more and more comfortable as I use the site and we get started. Some of the modules are taking me longer as I have to do them quite a few times to reach mastery.|
|Beth||I’m so encouraged working on this today. I can actually hear some of the words in the songs without repeating them over and over and over.
Something about this system, of listening, reading, etc. to them is really helping me.
Thank you so so much for this course. It is a blessing.
|Shelby||I took spanish in high school and failed miserable – I have learned more in lesson 1.1 Then I had learned in a whole year of high school spanish, I especially enjoyed the music videos It really made it alot of fun for me, I also like that I can go back and practice as much as i want .|
|Jo-Anne||As a 50+ years old participant at the cusp of intermediate level Spanish, this is an entirely new format for me to receive education. I have spent more time than needed on the exercises as I have been experimenting with the site to be able to take advantage of all it offers. As I belcome more familiar with the technology, the timelines you provide seem reasonable. I find I am learning on so many levels: new Spanish, general info & concepts provided from the TEDs lectures and becoming more tech savy. Initially I found the music videos difficult as I have trouble distinguishing even english words when there is background music. Repeating them several times works for me though and introduces me to phrases that I wouldn’t ordinarily hear in regular conversation i.e. la casa que se llena de alegria….how beautiful. I find the combination of videos provide me balance, stimulate me and keep me interested. From the comfort of my home I have made great progress working through the online grammar lessons, strengthening my listening skills with all the videos provided and then reinforcing my ability to speak through the weekly interactions with fellow students and native Spanish speakers. Ryan and Scott are incredibly available, supportive and knowledgeable about teaching, the Spanish language and the Instreamia technology that supports this learning.|
|Susan||I am absolutely grateful for what you are doing for the class. It was a little bit confusing when the introduction started all in Spanish. But I enjoyed collecting pieces of information here and there, it made the learning process more challenging! And it is the most creative language course I have ever taken. EVER!|
|Anonymous||I like watching the videos to learn becuase my greatest weakness is understanding the language when it is spoken by native speakers, especially when they speak to each other.|
|Anonymous||I have been very surprised and pleased with how effective I feel like this program is, even after just one day. Sometimes I feel like the exercises are too easy, but I think the format works on my brain in lots of different ways and I’m taking it in better than I have in traditional classes. So even though a particular question might be easy (like identifying that video=video), there’s so much going on that my brain is getting beautifully saturated.I really appreciate the exercises/explanations with the native speaker. And I also appreciate that you’re so hands on with the course, responding directly to our assignment submissions, questions, and concerns.|
|Anonymous||Thanks so much for this wonderful class. I am really enjoying learning with Instreamia and with all of the content you provide. One suggestion: I feel like my passive knowledge is growing rapidly, but I would like to have more practice actively using the vocabulary and structures being studied. I know the hangouts serve this purpose, but I would like more individual active practice, as well. For instance, if there could be computer-graded exercises where the students answer Spanish-language questions with complete sentences based on specific vocabulary or grammatical structures (i.e. present-tense conjugations; furniture items in a room; etc), that would be very helpful.|
|Angela||Absolutely loved this course, then a tenant set my house on fire and had to drop out, so I could start fixing it. I want to get back into it as soon as humanly possible. So sorry. Excellent course, very demanding but stimulating. By far the best language learning tool I’ve come across.|
|Michelle||Absolutely amazing use of internet technology. I don’t think I’m overstating things when I say sites like Instreamia could quite possibly change the world, and I doubt there is anyone alive who works harder than Scott and Ryan.|
|Ricky||truly a great course. I could not keep up. but it gave me the courage to visit the domincan republic. now I have to complete the course!|
|Isabelle||Love my Instreamia course! I would never have listened to Shakira or Laura Pausini without it. Really enjoy all the songs and videos. Thanks!|
|Olga||Amazing. Add German pls.|
|Elizabeth||It’s excellent! Thanks.|
